A theatre is a live performance or a production thereof. Theatrical denotes something related or connected to theatre. It is a branch of performing arts. Theatre is more than just what is perceived on stage. The overall effect of costumes, set and lighting creates immense impact. Each theatre production has its own philosophy, artistic process and theatrical approach.

Some theatres stem out purely from artistic freedom of expression while others are connected to some sort of political or spiritual ideology. Some people use theatre as a catalyst for social change. Theatre is basically a total team effort. It is a highly collaborative effort. Here, actors, directors and playwrights are the most recognizable figures. A production team produces these theatres. The production manager, stage manager, costume designer, set designer, lighting designer, sound designer all are intrinsic part of the theatrical production. Theatrical discusses that there exists various genres of theatres. Musical theatre is a theatrical genre where performances are song and dance oriented.

Comedy theatres always have happy endings. A comic drama piece that uses stereotyped characters, extravagant exaggeration, improbable situations and violent horseplay is called a comedy. The rock opera uses rock music. Theatres for social change convey some social messages. Here, the actors execute some sort of social injustice through their performance and try to awaken the conscience of the audience. Comedies can be of quite a few types. These are romantic comedy, comedy of situations, comedy of manners, musical comedy and black comedy. The sentimental drama with musical underscoring is called melodrama while a tragedy treats sorrowful and terrible events in serious and dignified style.
