Ed Wood is a popular film directed by Tim Burton that hit the theatres in the year 1994. This film was based on the life and times of the well-known transvestite movie director Edward Davis Wood, Jr who was infamous for, making technically incorrect movies in the genres of cowboy, horror, and science fiction
The film revolves around the infamous director and chronicles that part of his life where he produced the films that he is most known for. Played by the Hollywood actor Johnny Depp the film explores Woods relationship with his actor friend and partner Bela Lugosi as well as his girl friend Dolores Fuller. Tim Burton shot the film covering the six years where the director created “Glen and Glenda” his most well known film and ends with the release of “Plan 9 From Outer Space”. The film was mostly drawn from the biography written by the guitarist Rudolph Grey. Tim Burton as a backdrop for his film used this work called the “Nightmare Of Ecstasy”. The Director Tim Burton idolized Woods and his capabilities. He was involved in a project, which was based on Jekyll and Hyde adaptation. This movie however faced number of technical difficulties and Burton could not start filming. It was during this time that he was approached for the film and agreed to direct it if the script was prepared very fast.
The writers Larry Kareszewski and Scott Alexander accordingly churned out quite a long script at record time. Being fans of Ed wood themselves they delivered it with gusto and excitement. Even though the film did not do so well on the box-office it was praised by the critics and got an Oscar. Martin Landau earned himself an Oscar for the best supporting actor at the awards. One unique feature of the film was that it was made in black and white. The film has many actors that had appeared and worked with Ed Wood in his career, like Conrad Brooks and Gregory Walcott. Critics, for its style and the method of presentation had appraised the film however it departs from the truth at several instances. Dolores Fuller played by “Sex and the City” star Sarah Jessica Parker comes to know about her boyfriend director’s transvestitism after reading the screenplay of the film. In reality Dolores Fuller had communicated the fact that she had not come to know the truth till the completion of the film since she was hardly aware of the whole script being used only in some parts of the film. And Woods was reported as never wearing female clothes in front of her. Lugosi’s second marriage is completely omitted in the film.
