Basic Instinct

Basic Instinct is one of the very well known and famous movies in Hollywood history. It is easily the most recognizable film ever and has earned a lot of commercial success over the years. Directed by Paul Verhoeven and written by Joe Esterhas the movie has had cult following from the day of its release making its stars Sharon Stone and Michael Douglas instant celebrities increasing their fame and fortune manifolds

Basic Instinct was conceived as a crime erotic thriller that would charge the audiences and give them the adrenaline rush that they were looking for. The story line follows an investigation into mysterious deaths of individuals and the prime suspect is the sexy, over the top novelist of crime thrillers Catherine Trummel. Nick Curran the investigating officer of the case is first attracted and then sucked into a sexual affair with the main suspect. As time goes by the plot gets more twisted and complex where everybody ends up under the suspicion scanner. One of the very famous scenes in the movie that has become iconic is the Interrogation scene. Sharon Stone then an unknown face in Hollywood was selected for the role after surpassing other actors like Julia Roberts, Geena Davis and Kim Basinger who had done an almost similar role in another film called “The Avengers”.
In this particular scene Catherine Trummel is being interrogated by the investigating officer, but surprisingly the interrogators are more nervous then the individual getting interrogated. And then comes the infamous and now iconic crossing and uncrossing of legs. This reveals to the interrogators that she is without underwear making them more embarrassed and nervous in front of her and she apparently enjoying their discomfiture. The film was nominated for two Oscar awards. Sharon Stone was nominated in the category of Best Actress in the Golden Globe Awards. A second Golden Globe nomination was given to Frank Urioste for his film editing. Goldsmith also got several accolades for the original score of the movie. However the film got a lot of flak for its representation of Homosexuals and bisexuals. The film according to some gay rights activists negatively depicted gays and bisexuals portraying them as self-seeking, psychologically weak individuals. However there were also some other well-known voices that approved of the movie and supported it. Though it became hugely popular for the theatre audience, the film was also criticized for its high sexual content and depiction of violence. According to trivia the sex scene between Catherine and Nick that took place in Catherine’s house took an entire week to shoot. Michael Douglas was arguably unhappy with his dialogues. He believed that all the focus was centered on Sharon Stone in every scene. Wikipedia
