Jaws

Jaws is possibly the best known and scariest movie that had created a sensation in the year 1975 winning world wide praise and appreciation because of the way it was presented. It was considered to be a benchmark in Hollywood movies encouraging a whole new genre of filmmaking. It was an important milestone in the illustrious career of the famous Steven Spielberg

Jaws gave rise to the phrase “the summer blockbuster” and were the first in the line of the “high concept’ movie. These movies were heavily dependent on strategic marketing plans that are based on pre-release methods of building up publicity for the movie. The other movies that followed in this genre were movies like Star Wars. Jaws was based on the novel of the same name by the successful writer Peter Benchley who had written the screenplay of the film but he was finally replaced by the Tony and Pulitzer award winning writer Howard Sackler. Carl Gottileb who appears in the supporting role of Meadows in the film also rewrote some scenes. There were three mechanical sharks that were used for the filming of the entire movie. These sharks were not tested in real ocean waters when they were developed by special effects artist Bob Mattey and production designer Joe Alves. Once these machines were placed on the ocean water they sank to the bottom. Changing the location of the shoot to a place that had a sandy bottom solved this problem.
Martha’s Vineyard at Massachusetts provided this perfect place, which helped the mechanical sharks to work properly. Production of the movie went over budget and encountered lots of problems initially. Shooting whole sequences on the sea became extremely difficult with cameras not working getting constantly soaked. The mechanical sharks malfunctioning because of corrosion of their internal machinery by salt water. There were so many problems faced by the crewmembers of the film that they nicknamed the film “Flaws”. It was so difficult to work with the mechanical sharks that Spielberg had to limit their use in the film. In most of the scenes in the movie the shark’s presence is understood from the yellow barrels that keep floating. These suggestions ironically worked for the movie since it created a Hitckockian effect of suspense. The original footage of the real sharks were created with the help of Ron and Valerie Taylor in Australia. They used a dwarf for the footage with sharks encircling them to create the illusion of huge tiger sharks. The film was so successful that it gave Steven Spielberg tremendous freedom as a creative director. In every contract that he signed from now on he had the complete rights to make the “final cut” which did not inhibit his vision as a director and gave him more freedom. Jaws won three academy awards and several nominations in different categories at the Oscars. Wikipedia

The sequel to Ghostbusters was released on 16th June 1989 in the USA, with the tagline of the movie “Be Ready to Believe Us.” The movie was adorned with two award wins besides a nomination for the best family motion picture in comedy. The star cast remained much the same as that of the first movie Ghost Busters such as Bill Murray as Dr. Peter Venkman, Sigourney Weaver as Dana Barrett, besides Dan Aykroyd and Harold Ramis as Dr. Egon Spengler and others. The total runtime of the movie is a hundred and eight minutes, and the movie is filmed in English while the sound is given special Dolby stereo effects. The worldwide distributors of Ghostbusters II are the Columbia Pictures Corporation. An important trivia about Ghostbusters II is that the police cars in New York have been shown as having red and blue lights, but in reality, the police patrols have the red and white emergency lights instead of the red and blue lights. It seems this detail had somewhat escaped the vigilant eyes of the moviemakers. While most of the sequels that are made for movies, do not bear the same appeal, the sequel to Ghost busters, Ghost Busters II is often rated as “ Sequel scares up more fun”.

In Ghost busters II, that has hit the theatres almost five years after the original movie, the business of ghost extermination is rendered as almost penniless. The once profit earning business has now become almost bankrupt. The Ghostbusters has now been entangled between lawsuits and the various court orders. The ghost busters team comprising of Peter Venkman, Ray Stantz, Winston Zeddemore and Egon Spengler has been prohibited by the court orders to continue their task of extradition of the ghosts. Now all of them are trying after some other job in order to earn a livelihood. However the ghosts began their share of trouble once again. The city of New York is once again looming under the threat of ghost trouble with the ectoplasmic river of slime fizzing over the city. Ghost busters II essentially deals with an ancient sorcerer attempting to possess Dana Barrett’s baby and can be born anew as Dana’s baby. Ghostbusters now try to drive away the evil spirit and stop the city to get slimed in this process. As a consequence, Ghost Busters II successfully drives away the negative emotions of the city from getting covered by the dungeon of slime.Imdb

Before Sunset

Before Sunset is a film that released in 2004. The film is a sequel of “before Sunrise” that was released in 1995. In the movie, Jesse meets Celine in Paris at an event of book signing after nine years of their previous meeting. The event was made for promoting the first novel of Jesse. The story of the novel is based on the story of Jesse and Celine

Richard Linklater directs the film like its prequel. The director himself writes the screenplay. But the lead actor and actress of the film also assisted him in screenplay writing – a thing that was not done in the previous film. Actor Ethan hawke played the role of Jesse in the film. Julie Delpy plays the role of Celine. How ever Kim Krizan, who was the screenwriter of the movie Before Sunrise and the director of the film share the credit of the story. The lead actress of the film actress Julie Delpy also wrote two songs that featured in the film. Another song that is written by he r is included in the closing credits and in the soundtrack of the movie. Long takes and the use of steadicam for the tracking shots are the characteristics of the film. Another important feature of the film is that the reel time and the real time of the film is equal to each other.

The film is all about the reunion of two long departed people Jesse and Celine who are meeting after nine years. They talk, walk, take a boat trip, and go to Celine’s apartment. The meeting makes one thing evident that though after nine years many things have changed their love for each other has not. Both of them are settled in life but not really living it to the fullest. The only moments they are truly happy are the time they are together. They try to hide and claim things in one scene and contradict them in the next scene revealing the hypocrisy. This makes the characters most real as most of us take the refuge of hypocrisy at times. In the course of the meeting Jesse and Celine shares a dialogic joy that shows the true love for each other’s words and thoughts. Though Before Sunset is considered as one of the most romantic film the characters of the movie do not kiss each other or say ‘I love you’ like many other romantic movies. Before Sunset is a movie that makes us take a look into our past and present relationships and fall in love over again. The film has an appropriate tagline that makes all of us think “what if you had a chance with the one that got away?” Wikipedia
