A-Ba -Ni-Bi is the name of a song which in the year 1978 won Eurovision Song Contest that was perfomed for the sake of Iseael jointly by Izhar Cohen and Alphabeta. This was first Eurovision win of Israel. In English, the song can be translated as 'I Love You'.
This is however not the correct translation of A-Ba-Ni-Bi. In Bet language the song has been sung. It is the Hebrew equivalent of Pig Latin. A better translation of the song might be "I-ay Ove-Lay Ou-yay". Ehud Manor had been the Lyric composer. The music writer was Nurit Hirsh. Many popular music has been composed by the duo which includes the first Israeli entry into the ESC during the year 1973, named 'Ey Sham'. It is a disco song which pioneered the upcoming style that rocked the generation, While sometimes derided as a weak entry - particularly given its title - the song is regarded by most fans as one of the better entries in Contest history, often being performed as part of a medley of favourites.
The song was succeeded in 1979 as Contest winner by Gali Atari performing Hallelujah for Israel. It was the first win of Israel, afterwards however "Milk and Honey", they also won "Hallelujah". In 1998, they won Dana International. Someone commented that the song was absurd, saying, "When we were kids we made the girls suffer but that we really felt and said the language of Bet, which is a second letter of the Hebrew alphabet. The bet language means you put a second letter after each alphabet. So 'I love you' in the language of 'B' would be "I-bye Lo-bov You-bou." (Where Lo and Bo corresponds to the 'o' in 'love').
Ani ohev otakh or I love you becomes 'A-ba-ni-bi o-bo-e-bev o-bo-ta-bakh'. Izhar Cohen group consisted of Izhar Cohen, Reuven Erez, Itzhak Okev, Nehama Shutan and Ester Tzuberi. Izhar Cohen returned to Israel's Eurovision Song Contest in the year 1979, where he sang the song ole ole. Kobi Oshrat He being the man who wrote the winning Israeli entry wrote this time the song.
