Bridget Jones The Edge Of Reason

Beeban Kidron directed ‘Bridget Jones: The edge Of Reason’. The movie – ‘Bridget Jones: The edge Of Reason’ was rated as an average grade as per the popularity of the movie. The film was premiered jointly in November 2004 at Amsterdam and Netherlands. Due to huge popularity, this movie was screened in several countries like Poland, Australia, Croatia, Hungary, and Canada

On 12th November 2004, the movie was specially screened at the world famous film festival in France. Within a few days, this series earned huge popularity, which paved the way for Bridget Jones: The Edge of Reason to become a successful one. This time the movie was screened at the Bucharest Film Festival in Romania on 23rd November 2004. Bridget Jones: The Edge of Reason revolves around the souring relationship between Mark Darcy and herself. She gradually finds out that Mark Darcy has been a conservative. She finds it difficult to tackle a new boss who is by nature a strange contractor and she had to surpass the topsy-turvy situations for several days that she planned to spend as a vacation. The story centers around how Bridget Jones, protagonist of the play are portrayed by Renee Zellweger had to break up with Mark Darcy, character played by Colin Frath out of her malice. Bridget leaves London to be in Thailand with Daniel Cleaver (Hugh Grant) for filming a shoot. Incidentally, Mark is the one who saves Bridget out of serious international incident.

Bridget finds no reason of feeling jealous and happily unites with Mark. But things didn’t go that easy between Mark and Bridget. Suspicion crept up in Bridget’s Mind regarding Mark’s relation with Mark’s long-term intern Rebecca, played by Jacinda Barrett. Moreover, she is apparently gorgeous and a perfectionist. Adding on the story’s twist, Bridget’s former boss Daniel Cleaver arrives on the scene. ‘Bridget Jones: The Edge Of Reason’ seems a misnomer, as the element of reasoning seems to be lost somewhere amidst the twist and turn of the incidents. Especially, Bridget’s behaving like a paranoid over the intricacies of the relationship finds no place of reason. ‘Bridget Jones: The Edge of Reason’ was made as a sequel of the box office hit “Bridget Jones Diary” in 2001. The movie was an out comedy and the movie began by repeating many instances from the previous movie. ‘Bridget Jones: The Edge of Reason’ also shows how Bridget out of her critical living conditions gets accustomed to drinking alcohol taking puffs of nicotine and also faces imprisonment on accusation of drug peddling. Renee Zellweger has been critically acclaimed for her lifelike portrayal of Bridget Jones. The ambiance of the movie at Thailand is another object to be applauded besides the rolling of incidents. Bridget is undoubtedly the most lovable and truest of friends but what she desperately fights against is her ambivalence. Rogerebert Suntimes

In Batman Returns, Batman finally defeats the penguin while the greedy Max is destroyed by catwoman. There had been several actors approached for the role of catwoman. At first Annette Bening was short listed for the role, later Madonna was also considered, when the character finally went to Michelle Pfeiffer. The movie was a commercial success earning the biggest amounts of profits in the year 1992, it was also nominated for two academy awards in the category of Best make–up and best visual effects. The film was received by the critics ambiguously some lauding its concept and some not satisfied with the treatment. It had a signature Tim Burton element in them, its shady and solemn atmosphere that was enhanced by the gloomy behavior of Batman himself and the attitude of the Penguin as well as the catwoman. In fact the movie was considered not appropriate for children with its negative feel. The penguin played by Danny De Vito was a brilliant performance by the talented actor. He was supposedly advised to take up the role by Jack Nicholson who had himself gained considerable recognition by playing the Joker in the original movie. Wikipedia

Bridget Jones Diary

Bridget Jones’s Diary is a 1996 novel written in the genre of comedy. The author of this hugely successful book is the novelist Helen Fielding. The novel was later adapted into a film in 2001. This film, starring Renйe Zellweger in the title role, became an International success. Bridget Jones’s Diary tells the humourous tale of a single woman who tries to understand the ins and outs of her life and in the process, makes a mess of it.

The classic novel “Pride and Prejudice” had influenced the author in portraying the main character and her situation. Bridget is a lot like Elizabeth in “Pride and Prejudice” and there are similarities in the attitude of both their parents too. Mark Darcy, in Fielding’s novel, shares the name of the hero, Fitzwilliam Darcy, of Austen’s novel. The novel, as well as the film, portrays a confused Bridget trying to take control of her passionate feelings for her boss in the Publishing Company she works for. In the film, Hugh Grant as Daniel Cleaver gives a brilliant performance of a cad while Mark Darcy, played by Colin Firth, is Bridget’s real love. What Bridget fails to understand is that why others are so curious about her ‘barely there’ love life when she herself is not too sure about it.
She is brilliant in goofing up her life and making a fool of herself publicly. This comes out better in the cinematic adaptation where Renee gives a great performance as Bridget Jones. At first. there had been a lot of dissent in taking an American Actress for a quintessentially English character. A lot of other actresses were considered for the role. Sally Phillips was rejected because she was not considered famous enough to carry out the performance convincingly. Later, Kate Winslet was auditioned and was also chosen. However, she was later rejected owing to her age. The creators wanted an older actress who could play the role of a 30-year-old woman and Renйe Zellweger fitted the bill perfectly. However, she was lauded later for her performance and also earned herself an academy Award nomination for herself .The film had also scooped up a lot of awards and nominations and encouraged the making of a sequel “Bridget Jones: The Edge of Reason”. “Pride and Prejudice” also had a televised version where Colin Firth played the character of the snobbish hero Darcy. In the film adaptation of Bridget Jones’s Diary, Colin Firth again played the role of Darcy’s namesake, Mark Darcy, who is the love interest of Bridget. The film has guest appearances by two well-known authors, the hugely controversial Salman Rushdie and the popular bestseller writer Jeffrey Archer. Wikipedia

Full Metal Jacket

Full Metal Jacket is a war movie portraying the atrocities of war that take place when two countries are engaged in combat. The movie is adapted from a well-written novel by Gustav Hasford who himself was a marine soldier and had served in the Vietnam War Seeing the war in close quarters is a very difficult experience that is very well portrayed in the novel.

Full Metal Jacket directed by Stanley Kubrick gives the audience a view of the war with all its problems and evils that cannot be avoided. The film derives its title from the weapons that are used in the war. The full metal jacketed bullets that are used as ammunition during war. The film is divided into two different parts that has the single war theme running through it. It chronicles the life of the U.S Marines who are recruited and then follows them throughout their training period seen from the eyes of the new recruit J.T Davis alias “Joker”. The first part of the film deals mostly with the inhuman treatment of the imperfect and out of shape private Gomer Pyle brilliantly played by Vincent D’Onofrio who’s slow but sure fall into insanity is presented in the first part. The actor had to gain almost 70 pounds to fit into the role of the fat marine, breaking the record of the well known Robert DeNiro where he had gained almost 60 ponds for his character in the film “Raging Bull’’.

Private Pyle is a slow and a dumb recruit who has certain imperfections that makes him the focus of the anger of everyone in his platoon. He also has to take a lot of flak from his leader Sergeant Hartman played by R.Lee Erney. The film portrays how the young marines are mentally as well as physically tortured in order to turn them from humans to killing machines. For the role of the abusive Sergeant the director wanted to have someone who was very convincing. Trivia has it that the director did not allow the members of his crew, especially Erney and his privates to interact much before filming started or even after. The first part of the film ends with Sergeant Hartman being shot by Pyle and his own suicide. The second part of the film starts in the warfront itself portraying combat with the Vietnam forces at close quarters. It concentrates on Joker and his career as a sergeant in Vietnam who is a war correspondent and covering the war for Stars and Stripes. The film had gained a lot of recognition in the form of nominations for an Oscar in the year 1988, and a Japanese Academy Award nomination in the next year. It also won the Boston Society of Film Critics Awards for the best director as well as best supporting actor for, R. Lee Erney.Wikipedia

Fatal Attraction

Termed as one of the most scariest movies of all times in Bravo’s chart Fatal Attraction was a path breaking film that gave rise to a lot of debate regarding the values of marriage and affairs outside marriage.

A sexual fling of a married man gone completely wrong is the backdrop of the movie. Even though he moves on with life after the brief affair the woman does not want to let go and things go berserk when she is discovered to be suffering from Borderline Personality disorder or (BPD). A mental illness that makes her obsessive about the man who just had a casual affair with her. Alex played brilliantly by Glenn Close is a psychotic individual who tries to hang on to the married Dan Gallagher (Michael Douglas), even after he has completely got over her. This obsession becomes so dangerous that the attorney soon finds his life turned completely upside down by the constant stalking of the woman. The difficult role of Alex in Fatal Attraction played by Glenn Close was first offered to a lot of accomplished actors but many turned it down. Finally it was taken up by Glenn who was till then known only for her roles as a good woman in films like “Jagged Edge” and “The Natural”.

The film has many frightening scenes, and the portrayal of the scorned woman and her ensuing madness comes across wonderfully so that it becomes really scary at times. One of the high points in the movie is when Alex not being able to get the attention she wants from Dan kills his daughters pet rabbit and puts it on the boiler of their kitchen. Another such scene is that of the climax when Glen’s character tries to murder Dan’s wife when she is taking a shower. However she herself gets killed in the process. The creators of Fatal Attraction had thought of another ending to the film where the character of Alex finally kills herself. However trivia has it that the audiences that were shown this ending was not exactly happy with it. The makers then put together a highly dramatic episode that is possibly among the most remembered scenes in Hollywood history. Michael Douglas being pursued with a knife and then finally drowning Glen in the bathtub from which emerges suddenly and is finally shot by Dan’s wife, were considered extremely violent scenes for Japanese audiences and therefore a different version was shot and then released. The film was a commercial success raking in the second highest business in the year 1987, the highest being the film “Three Men and a Baby”. The film was nominated in several categories in the Oscars including best actress, best director, best picture and best writing. Wikipedia
