Bridget Jones Diary

Bridget Jones’s Diary is a 1996 novel written in the genre of comedy. The author of this hugely successful book is the novelist Helen Fielding. The novel was later adapted into a film in 2001. This film, starring Renйe Zellweger in the title role, became an International success. Bridget Jones’s Diary tells the humourous tale of a single woman who tries to understand the ins and outs of her life and in the process, makes a mess of it.

The classic novel “Pride and Prejudice” had influenced the author in portraying the main character and her situation. Bridget is a lot like Elizabeth in “Pride and Prejudice” and there are similarities in the attitude of both their parents too. Mark Darcy, in Fielding’s novel, shares the name of the hero, Fitzwilliam Darcy, of Austen’s novel. The novel, as well as the film, portrays a confused Bridget trying to take control of her passionate feelings for her boss in the Publishing Company she works for. In the film, Hugh Grant as Daniel Cleaver gives a brilliant performance of a cad while Mark Darcy, played by Colin Firth, is Bridget’s real love. What Bridget fails to understand is that why others are so curious about her ‘barely there’ love life when she herself is not too sure about it.
She is brilliant in goofing up her life and making a fool of herself publicly. This comes out better in the cinematic adaptation where Renee gives a great performance as Bridget Jones. At first. there had been a lot of dissent in taking an American Actress for a quintessentially English character. A lot of other actresses were considered for the role. Sally Phillips was rejected because she was not considered famous enough to carry out the performance convincingly. Later, Kate Winslet was auditioned and was also chosen. However, she was later rejected owing to her age. The creators wanted an older actress who could play the role of a 30-year-old woman and Renйe Zellweger fitted the bill perfectly. However, she was lauded later for her performance and also earned herself an academy Award nomination for herself .The film had also scooped up a lot of awards and nominations and encouraged the making of a sequel “Bridget Jones: The Edge of Reason”. “Pride and Prejudice” also had a televised version where Colin Firth played the character of the snobbish hero Darcy. In the film adaptation of Bridget Jones’s Diary, Colin Firth again played the role of Darcy’s namesake, Mark Darcy, who is the love interest of Bridget. The film has guest appearances by two well-known authors, the hugely controversial Salman Rushdie and the popular bestseller writer Jeffrey Archer. Wikipedia
