American Beauty is a movie that portrays what happens when ones desires and wants are kept hidden from the world by creating an artificial exterior that can only hide the real self for a limited period of time. Kevin Spacey playing a forty year old trying to cope with a mid-life crisis is brilliant in this movie where he is seen in a heart warming performance that won him an academy award.
The film almost made a sweep at the awards in the year 1999 with it getting as many as eight nominations at the Oscars with eighty awards and sixty-three nominations at a variety of other award ceremonies. They all need a motivation in their lives and this is presented in several ways. Lester gains his motivation by getting terribly infatuated by his daughter’s best friend Angela. Jane finds her motivating factor in Ricky Fitts who secretly photographs her while Lester’s wife has an affair with her realtor counterpart who is more successful then her. However all of them eventually realize that they have to be honest to themselves. Jane realizes it after Lester’s death while his daughter’s transformation is more gradual, she gains confidence in herself with the help of Ricky’s love and is able to question even her friend Angela’s ways who had dominated her till now. Angela on the other hand has till now lived in a dream world where she had created a sexy image for herself. Bragging about her sexual escapades with fashion designers and a host of others actually being a virgin. However the truth comes out when Lester is not able to take her virginity in a moment of self-illumination for both Lester as well as Angela. Another repressed human being is Frank Fitts who has been denying his identity as a homosexual for many years and finally kills the man who spurns him, Lester.
