Batman Returns

Batman Returns is the second venture of the Batman series that had Michael Keaton playing the title role and his adversary played by the well-known Penguin. The story of batman returns unfolds as the powerful businessman Max Shreck is abducted by the villain Penguin and is given the option of helping the deformed being in returning to everyday life at Gotham city or facing dire consequences

Max has certain dubious businesses that if declared would result in ruining his career and status. He is therefore forced to listen to the Penguin and makes a plan of getting the mayor’s child kidnapped and eventually being restored by Penguin thus making him a hero in Gotham city. After reverting to the normal life of Gotham city the Penguin tries to find out about his real parents. When he does find them they are already dead but he publicly forgives them for abandoning him thus winning the hearts of more Gotham city dwellers. However only one person is very doubtful about this image of the penguin and that is Batman. Bruce Wayne starts keeping tabs on him .On the other hand the truth of Max’s unholy business ventures are revealed to his secretary played by Michelle Pfeiffer who is then murdered but is manifested back into life as the catwoman who has 9 lives. She tries to get back at Shreck but in the process starts fighting with Batman who comes in the way. She teams up with the Penguin in destroying Batman not knowing his true identity. Later on when they realize who they really are it is too late.
In Batman Returns, Batman finally defeats the penguin while the greedy Max is destroyed by catwoman. There had been several actors approached for the role of catwoman. At first Annette Bening was short listed for the role, later Madonna was also considered, when the character finally went to Michelle Pfeiffer. The movie was a commercial success earning the biggest amounts of profits in the year 1992, it was also nominated for two academy awards in the category of Best make–up and best visual effects. The film was received by the critics ambiguously some lauding its concept and some not satisfied with the treatment. It had a signature Tim Burton element in them, its shady and solemn atmosphere that was enhanced by the gloomy behavior of Batman himself and the attitude of the Penguin as well as the catwoman. In fact the movie was considered not appropriate for children with its negative feel. The penguin played by Danny De Vito was a brilliant performance by the talented actor. He was supposedly advised to take up the role by Jack Nicholson who had himself gained considerable recognition by playing the Joker in the original movie. Wikipedia
