A Place In The Sun Winner Of Six Academy Awards

A place in the Sun is a classic Hollywood film released in the year 1951. It has an ensemble cast Montgomery Clift, Elizabeth Taylor, Shelley Winters, Herbert Heyes and Annie Revere. The film was highly successful and won six Academy Awards. It was selected for preservation in the U.S. National Film Registry by the Library of Congress as being culturally, historically or aesthetically significant.

A Place in the Sun tells the story of a working class young man George Eastman, played by Montgomery Clift. He is thrust into a job in his rich uncles factory to learn the ropes of the business. There he gets involved with a simple girl Alice Tripp (Shelley Winters), who works on the assembly line in the same factory. The story then takes a new turn. At his uncles party George is introduced to a gorgeously beautiful socialite, Angela Vickers (Elizabeth Taylor).

George gets smitten by her instantly. He promptly forgets all about Alice. But Alice discovers that she is pregnant and informs George about it. George is at a loss in handling his pregnant girlfriend and his newfound love. When Alice tries to pressurize George into marrying her, George asks Alice to abort the child. They both have an argument and both fall out of a boat in a lake in an accident. George is able to pull himself out but Alice gets drowned. George is arrested on the charge of Alices murder and sentenced to death in the end of the film, A Place in the Sun.

The film A Place in the Sun was directed by George Stevens. The film was adapted by Harry Brown and Michael Wilson from the novel, An American Tragedy by Theodore Dreiser. The novel was based on the 1906, murder of Grace Brown. This murder trial drew a lot of international attention.

The film A Place in the Sun won six Academy Awards and three nominations at the Oscars. It won the awards for; Best Cinematography-Black and White, Best Film Editing, Best Director, Best Costume Design-Black and White, Best Music, Scoring of a Dramatic or Comedy Picture and Best Writing, Screenplay. It was nominated in the category of Best Actor in a Leading Role, Best Actress in a Leading Role and Best Picture.

The film A Place in the Sun was released on 14th August, 1951 in USA. The film was distributed by Paramount Pictures. Major part of the film was shot in Lake Tahoe, California, USA. The film also won several other awards apart from the Oscars like, Golden Globe Award, DGA Award, Silver Ribbon Award, WGA Award and NBR Award.
