Jaws 2

Jaws 2 is considered to be the most successful sequel of the original shark movie. Released in the year 1978 it was directed by Jeannot Szwarc after Steven Spielberg refused to direct a sequel to the definitive original that he had given shape to.

This movie traces the events taking place after four years the shark had first surfaced in the beaches and carried out its carnage. Roy Scheider reprises his role in the sequel as Martin Brody the ever suspecting police chief of Amity Island. He becomes apprehensive when a water skier goes missing in the sea and so does her boat. An Orca is also found on the beach which seems to have been attacked by a shark. He voices his opinion to selectmen who do not pay any heed to his warnings. The tourist attractions in the small island town are just being revived and they do not want the people to get scared of unwanted things that are based only on speculation. Brody however tries his best to convince everyone of the danger by gathering evidence like photographs taken by one diver before being attacked by the great white.
However he fails and loses his job after causing a stir on the beach by a false alarm where orders everyone out of the water. As many has three mechanicals harks were created by the technicians of the movie. The production designers Bob Mattey and Joe Alves used the same casts that were used for the original movie. They designed a platform shark also known as the “luxurious shark” by the technicians. The mechanical sharks used for the first movie had to be altered and redone to a large extent. Bob Mattey’s designs this time were a lot more advanced this time. The other two sharks were a fin and a whole shark both of which could be hauled by boats. The makers of this sequel realized that they could not use their previous strategy of using the shark as less as possible which had created scintillating suspense. According to Szwarc himself they could not cash in on the effectiveness of the original strategy. On the other hand however the makers tried to create a scarier look to the fish making it more threatening. Roy Scheider as Martin Brody even when he had left from another Universal production The Deer Hunter. During filming a particular shot where the teen group including the police chief’s two sons and the mayor’s son are being attacked by the shark. Real Hammerhead sharks were encircling them while shooting. The tagline of the movie was one of the highlights of the movie “Just when you thought it was safe to go back in the water...”Wikipedia
