Harry Potter film series is the highest grossing series ever produced. These are films based on the fantasy series by J K Rowling, the creator of Harry Potter. Till now the film has grossed over $4 48 billion worldwide.
Till now the Harry Potter films are five in number. They are Harry Potter and the Sorcerers Stone, Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets, Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban, Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire and the last released of the series, Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix. The under production movie of the series, Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince, is slated for a November 2008 release.
Warner Brothers bought the rights of the series from J.K. Rowling for a reported ₤1 million to produce the Harry Potter films with the condition that the cast be predominantly British though there were Irish actors like Richard Harris playing Dumbledore. The Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire saw a cast that included German and French actors.
Initially Steven Spielberg was approached to direct the Harry Potter films. He declined though stating that there was every chance of the films being big grosser and making money from the film would be as easy as shooting dicks in a barrel. A number of directors were thought of after Spielberg declined the offer. Finally in March 2000 Chris Columbus was appointed to direct the first two films for his reputation in directing hit films like the Home Alone series and Mrs. Doubtfire. J.K. Rowling was made an executive producer with quite a say in the film.
The third film of the Harry Potter films series, Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban was directed by Alfonso Cuaron while Mike Newell directed the fourth film, Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire. The next released film in the series; Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix has been directed by David Yates who is also directing the sixth film in the series Harry Potter and the Half-blood Prince.
Daniel Radcliffe, Emma Watson and Rupert Grint were selected to play the roles of Harry, Hermione and Ron from an audition of over thousand children. They were instant stars and played the parts for all the five films and are scheduled to play the roles in the remaining two Harry Potter films too. The other important characters in the movies are Robbie Coltrane (Hagrid); Alan Rickman (Severus Snape); Tom Felton (Draco Malfoy); Maggie Smith (Minerva McGonagall) and Richard Harris and Michael Gambon (Albus Dumbledore).
The Harry Potter films began as family films with good visual effects and enjoyable incidents. But with time the tone grew darker and the present tone is quite dark. Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets was praised for bring superior to the first film.
