WINC FM 92.5 American Adult Contemporary Radio

WINC-FM is an American Adult Contemporary themed radio station serving many regions. The radio station is fully known as 92.5 WINC FM (WINC is pronounced as WINK). It caters to the audience in the Shenandoah Valley, Northern Virginia, the Eastern Panhandle of West Virginia, parts of Maryland, Pennsylvania and the Washington D.C. metropolitan area.

The FM channel is broadcasted from Winchester, Virginia. The popular slogan of this station is The Best Songs on the Radio. The name of the station has actually originated from its city of license. WINC-FM has a call sign: WINChester. WINC FM is known for its exceptionally strong signals for any FM station. This is because its transmitter is located at the top of a mountain and hence observes a wider area according to its line of sight. Its power also gets grandfathered. The FM station can be heard very clearly in Northern Virginia suburban area of Washington DC and at times, it can be heard as far south as Richmond city. The FM station is challenged by another popular country music station Q102 WUSQ-FM at achieving the top position in the Winchester markets.

WINC FM was established by Richard F. Lewis, Jr. It all started in 1939 when Lewis used to live in California. The Fredericksburg Chamber of Commerce had advertised for a radio station operator for the community, in the Broadcasting Magazine. Lewis applied for this and was appointed. He later on formed the Fredericksburg Broadcasting Corporation and established the radio station WFVA.

After that, in 1941 Lewis moved to Winchester, Virginia and built the radio station WINC AM which went on the air on 26th June, 1941. After that progress, Lewis built his own radio station and also acquired other ones. In this process he eventually progressed with the countrys first FM Radio station WINC FM. WINC FM is singed on as WRFL, as a token of respect to its founder. Until recently, WINC-FM was owned by Mid-Atlantic Network, Inc., a family owned corporation and licensee of six radio stations in Winchester and Fredericksburg, Virginia.

On April 13, 2007, a media website DCRTV reported that WINC-FM along with its sister channels WINC-AM, WWRE-FM, and WWRT-FM in Winchester and WBQB-FM and WFVA-AM in Fredericksburg, VA has been sold to Centennial Broadcasting – a Roanoke, Virginia based company. The news was confirmed on May 17, finally revealing that the stations were bought for 36 million dollars. It was further reported that the staff and format of the station would not be changed.
