Westwood One Inc is based in the city of New York and is managed by CBS Radio that is the radio arm of CBS Corporation. Based on programming quantity Westwood One Inc is the largest radio network in the United States. Norman J. Pattiz founded this network in 1976.
Norman J. Pattiz was a former advertising sales executive who was associated with Los Angeles TV station. His Motown weekend show was a grand success, which stimulated him to several more shows during the 1970s. With the money raised by the IPO Mr. Pattiz purchased the Mutual Broadcasting System in the year 1985 and the NBC Radio Network in 1987. Thus Westwood One was formed and the company also purchased Unistar Radio Networks in 1994 and l Metro Networks in the year 1996. After purchasing the Mutual Broadcasting System in 1985 by the Westwood One it continued to operate Mutual as a separate entity for the network program service into the 1990s.
Notably in September 2006, Westwood One hired the first Chief Digital Media Officer Gary Krantz. He was formerly the President of Air America, EVP/Operations for Clear Channel/Premiere Radio Networks, AMFM Networks and also acted as the co-founder of MJI Broadcasting. In the year 2007, in addition to all these Westwood One also acquired the radio rights to feature the Last Night on The Tonight Show primarily with Jay Leno who is from the Premiere Radio Networks. He is undoubtedly very famous for effectively uniting all of NBC's radio productions under one network.
Westwood One also provides a great deal of support for operational, sales and marketing promotions in favor of the CBS Radio Network, whose properties are owned by the CBS Corporation. This connection surely helped in developing the Westwood One's portfolio of digital assets rapidly in the areas of talk, music, syndicated news product and the interactive traffic services through Westwood's Metro Networks. The company was importantly one of the largest producers and distributors in the United States for their radio programming. The main functions include the broadcasting of entertainment, weather, news, sports, talk, and traffic programming to about 7,700 radio stations all across the USA.
Westwood One syndicated several popular programs like Beatle Years, Beatle Brunch, CMT's Country Countdown USA, Absolutely Live, Superstar Concert Series, Weekly Country Music Countdown, Country Gold Saturday Night, Park Weekend Countdown with Terrence and Rocsi, MTV TRL Weekend Countdown, Off the Record with Mary Turner for obtaining variety of music formats.
