I am Legend Movie By Frank Lawrence

The original story of the grand movie I am Legend was written by Richard Matheson and was published in 1954. It was adapted to screen twice in the form of The Last Man on Earth and The Omega Man. Now the novel which is described by some as the best science fiction story ever gets adapted to a film of the same name starring Will Smith and will be released on 14th December. It has been directed by Frank Lawrence.

Expectations set on the movie I am Legend will be high and it will be keenly watched by critics worldwide as both of the earlier adaptations could not be up to the mark. Producer and co-writer Avika Goldsman says that the movie is a hybrid between the original story and the 1971 screen adaptation of the story The Omega Man. The film hit the news recently this November when as late as November 18th it was reported that the ending of the movie is being re-shot.

I am Legend adapts the main theme from the original story. It depicts Will Smith as the lone human survivor on Earth in the year 2012. The rest of humanity has been converted to vampire bats by strange plague that gets spread by a germ borne on dust storms resulting from an apparent nuclear war. Will Smith plays the character of Robert Neville who is a brilliant scientist and is immune to the disease due to the bite of a Panamanian vampire bat years before. Now his immune blood is the only hope for humanity and its survival.

There are chilling moments in I am Legend when Smith rides through an abandoned and empty city of New York alone in a fancy car along with his only companion, a German-shepherd dog. We find him speaking to himself and wandering through the city. The film cuts back and forth between the beginning of the plague in the year 2012 and works nicely to build the tension at the time of apocalypse and in the post apocalyptic period.

The real put down to the movie is the horrible CGI visual effects and graphics that have designed the monsters into non believable ones and that does not at all look real. The next let down is the ending. In Franks adaptation of I am Legend, the end was first wrapped up in an unconvincing manner and then the studio decided to re shoot it with more action packed adventure. Shocktillyoudrop
