Beauty Shop Comedy Film

Beauty Shop is a spin-off of the Barbershop franchise and is a comedy film released in 2005. Directed by Bille Woodruff and produced by Shakim Compare, David Koberman, Queen Latifah, Robert Teitel, George Tilman Jr., the movie is based on a story by Elizabeth Hunter. Its the story of a hairstylist Gina Norris and how she sets up her own business and the problems associated with her ex-boss.

Gina Norris the main character of Beauty Shop is played by Queen Latifah. She is a hairstylist who moves from Chicago to Atlanta, so that her daughter can receive good music lesson from a decent school. She was successful in her work but after her boss, played by Kevin Bacon, berates her work, she decides to set up her own shop by purchasing a rundown salon.

The plot of Beauty Shop then shows Ginna Norris hiring several professional stylists for her salon. One of the stylists is her rebellious sister-in-law Darnelle, played by Keshia Knight-Pulliam. The shop becomes successful and attracts a wide range of clientele consisting of wives of professional athletes, several wealthy white women etc. An electrician named Joe, played by Djimon Hounson was also hired by her, who was also skilled on the piano.

As her ex-boss business went down, he hired a Health Inspector to bring down Ginas Salon. Next the plot of Beauty Shop reveals a tragic incident which shows Ginnas shop is vandalized. Lil JJ starring as Willie then shows Ginna the tape where her ex-boss is caught talking with the Health Inspector. Ginna wanted to take action against this and later in the night, she visits her old salon with a couple of guys to rough up her ex-boss who tried to ruin her business.

The film Beauty Shop has a cameo role played by Trenyce during the club scene. The movie has certain goof-ups as well. Lynns mole shifts from the left side of her forehead to the right at different points of the film. When Vanessa is shown talking to Lil JJ outside the shop, she takes off her headphones and puts them around her neck but while shes talking it moves to her lap from her neck without her actually touching it.

Beauty Shop was nominated at the BET Comedy Awards in the category Outstanding Directing for a Theatrical Film for Billie Woodruff. Queen Latifah was nominated as the outstanding lead actress in a theatrical film and as the outstanding actress in a motion picture at the Image Awards, Outstanding performance by an actress at the Black Movie Awards and also as the Best Actress award at the Black Reel Award.
