Children of Men had its worldwide release in the year 2007, and were considered as one of the most exciting and positive science-fiction movies of all times. Dealing with the concept of hope, faith and redemption of humanity from total destruction the film has a powerful story not seen in many science-fiction flicks
Adapted from P.D James novel the film chronicles the journey of the protagonist Theo played by Clive Owen in search of deliverance from suffering and annihilation. The backdrop of the film is the futuristic year 2027, when all humanity is due to be extinct by the next hundred years. There is no hope for survival since this scheme of things has increased the activities of terror and destruction. Mankind’s only hope is the ambitious Human Project that is working round the clock in order to save mankind from permanent destruction. In this topsy tervy world a ray of hope is introduced with the news that a pregnant West African refugee named Kee has surfaced. The film then goes on to portray how she is delivered into safe hands. The theme of infertility portrayed in the film is not explained very well. It may be considered to be a symbol of the rapid decline of mankind or can be taken as divine judgment on humankind. Theo Faron played by Clive Owen is the archetype of general mankind who is unsure about what would happen in the future and has not been treated well by life with his only son dying of a dangerous flu, and his being estranged from his only wife Julian played by Julianne Moore. However destiny makes them meet again and they are thrown together in order to deliver the pregnant mother Kee from the refugee camp of which Julian is in charge. The film ends with Julian and Theo killed however Kee safely delivered to Human Project ship rightfully called Tomorrow .
The film explores the consequences of a world that is bent on destruction and the loss of hope and faith. Children of Men was considered to be an extension of the director’s previous project Y tu mam’a tambie’n, which is also based on the theme of a journey that is undertaken by two young kids and a woman. The title Children of Men is also a reflection of the phrase from the Bible “Thou turnest man to destruction; and sayest, Return, ye children of men.” According to the director Alfonso Cuar’on he did not want to take overt Christian symbolism in the film but he wanted to be an underlying theme. The film gathered many awards in the sector of cinematography and camera work that had given it a new look and feel. Wikipedia
